I love Sciascia's Sea Fantasy, so I thought I'd give this a shot. He’s definitely one of the more interesting and experimental library music composers, and the Digressioni LP is no exception.

This is not classic library easy-listening or jazz-funk cheese, but wonderfully atmospheric, sometimes dissonant, jazzy pieces. Cinematic, nocturnal, suspense vibes.

As a whole it does have quite a few compositions that seem purposefully skeletal and therefore don’t make a ton of sense separated from any visuals, like the ominous, sparse Trumpet-driven piece ‘Eliofobia’. Library music is supposed ot be "stock" production music, after all. It might be good sample fodder, though!

But the LP also has lots of compositions that are worth exploring on their own like the sombre “Assonanza In Mi” and the dreamy ‘Occhi Nella Notte’ (aptly, ‘Eyes in the night’). The melancholy, reverby flute in these songs remind me of another great library orchestra, The London Studio Group (fronted by library legend Basil Kirchin), especially their LP [Album3695974]. It almost sounds like the flute in a mellotron-keyboard.

Another highlight is the ‘Nebbia E Blues’. With experimental delay effects on the drums and an extremely sensual sax, it sounds so positively David Lynch-esque, you’d swear that [Artist1606] had drawn inspiration from this exact song.

I love the production. No surprise there, considering the year. It’s very of its era and lo-fi by today’s standards, but wonderfully analog-sounding and pleasing to the ear. The instruments glue together really well, the drums are understated and not too fat or in your face, making it a very dynamic experience.

Conclusion. You can sense Armando Sciascia's experimental spirit in the studio experimentation and dissonance throughout. It is wonderfully atmospheric with a handful of very interesting compositions that can stand on their own, but it is ultimately marred by the very soundtrack-esque feel that demands a visual.

Keepers: “Assonanza In Mi”, “Ochi Nella Notte”, “Nebbia E Blues”.

Good sample fodder: “Simbolica Di Plastica”, “Eliofobia”, “Vaso di Giada”.
